Taxman Hunting Dodgey Car Trade Dealers

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced a crackdown to recover a total of £50m across the UK to tackle revenue dodgers. The taxman also sets his aim on the legal profession in London and the hair & beauty industry in the North-East of England. This includes capturing £3 million from the Scottish Motor Trade.

The HMRC has set up special divisions to target certain areas which they believe are evading tax – with evidence to prove. These special teams will visit traders’ premises and examine their records as well as “other investigations”.

The point in this is highlighted by Exchequer secretary when he states:

“We have made it clear that we will not tolerate tax evasion and we are determined to crack down on the minority who choose to break the rules.

“Everyone needs to pay the taxes they owe in full. It is not fair that at a time when most hard-working people are paying the right tax, others are trying to get out of paying what they should.””

Having a reputation of ‘getting the job done’, the HMRC said that since May 2011 it has launched over 30 task-forces which have been very successful in achieving targets.

Mike Eland, director, general enforcement and compliance, said:

“These taskforces bring together specialists from across HMRC to find people who are not paying what they should. If you have paid all your taxes you have nothing to worry about.”

Most of us are honest people, at least we’d like to think so! I hope none of you out there are dodgey dealers!!
